Screening for Plagiarism Policy
TATANAN: Jurnal Hukum dan Syariah is committed to maintaining academic integrity and ensuring the originality of published scholarly works. The journal adopts a zero-tolerance policy toward plagiarism and requires all authors to ensure the originality of their manuscripts and appropriately acknowledge all sources.
1. Policy Based on the Severity of Plagiarism
Actions against plagiarism are determined according to the severity of the violation identified in a manuscript.
1.1. Minor Plagiarism
Minor plagiarism occurs when a short section of another article is copied without proper citation, but does not involve significant data or original ideas from the source.
Action: The authors will receive a formal warning and be required to revise the plagiarized content and provide appropriate citations to the original source.
1.2. Intermediate Plagiarism
Intermediate plagiarism involves the uncredited use of a substantial portion of another scholarly work without appropriate acknowledgment or citation.
Action: The manuscript will be rejected, and the authors will be prohibited from submitting new manuscripts to TATANAN: Jurnal Hukum dan Syariah for one year.
1.3. Severe Plagiarism
Severe plagiarism is characterized by the unauthorized reproduction or unattributed use of significant original ideas, findings, or results from another publication.
Action: The manuscript will be rejected immediately, and the authors will be prohibited from submitting any manuscripts to TATANAN: Jurnal Hukum dan Syariah for five years.
2. Policy Based on the Similarity Index
The similarity index is used as one of the considerations in assessing manuscript originality. Editorial decisions are not based solely on the similarity percentage but also take into account the context of the similarities, citation accuracy, quotation practices, and the results of manuscript screening.
| Similarity Index | Editorial Action |
|---|---|
| Above 40% | The manuscript will be rejected without the opportunity for resubmission due to excessive similarity. |
| 20–39% | The manuscript will be returned to the authors for revision. All similar passages must be reviewed, appropriately paraphrased, and properly cited. The manuscript may be reconsidered after satisfactory revision. |
| 20% or below | The manuscript may be considered for acceptance, although minor revisions may be required. Authors must ensure that all quotations and paraphrased content are properly cited. |
The similarity percentage is not the sole basis for determining whether plagiarism has occurred. A manuscript with a low similarity index may still violate academic ethics if ideas or works are used without proper acknowledgment. Conversely, similarities arising from legitimate quotations, references, or common terminology should be assessed in context.
3. Plagiarism and Academic Integrity
Plagiarism is defined as the use of ideas, information, or wording from another source without giving proper credit. Whether committed intentionally or unintentionally, plagiarism constitutes a serious violation of academic ethics and is strictly prohibited in scholarly publishing.
A citation is required whenever an author uses specific information from a source, including names, dates, places, statistical figures, and other factual data. An exception applies to common knowledge, referring to facts that are widely known and generally accepted within the relevant field.
Proper citation is also required when an author adopts ideas from another source, including approaches to data interpretation, methodological approaches, theoretical frameworks, or broader developments within a discipline. Even when an idea is further developed or modified, credit must still be given to the original source.
When an author uses the exact words of another source, quotation marks and an appropriate citation must be provided. Four or more consecutive words copied verbatim must be enclosed in quotation marks to clearly identify the original wording. In such cases, a citation without quotation marks is insufficient to meet academic attribution standards.
4. Policy Enforcement and Sanctions
TATANAN: Jurnal Hukum dan Syariah enforces a strict policy on academic integrity. The editorial board reserves the right to withdraw an acceptance decision or retract a published article if it is found to violate the journal's standards concerning plagiarism or improper source attribution.
