Purpose: This article examines the relationships among the quality of the family environment, social support, patterns of interaction, and university students’ psychological well-being. It focuses on support mechanisms that may protect mental health while recognizing that students do not all share the same experiences.
Design/Methodology: This study employs a conceptual literature review with a thematic synthesis of theories of psychological well-being, social support, family systems, social connectedness, and student adjustment. The article does not claim to present primary survey data, interviews, or causal testing.
Findings: The literature indicates that warm family communication, emotional and instrumental support, a sense of belonging in friendships, and access to campus assistance are associated with psychological adjustment. Conversely, relational conflict, stigma, isolation, and achievement-related pressure may increase vulnerability.
Practical Implications: Higher education institutions should develop community-based support, mental health literacy, peer support, and confidential referrals to professional services. Families should strengthen supportive communication and respect students’ autonomy.
Originality/Value: The article proposes a Family–Connectedness–Support–Adjustment framework to distinguish relationship quality, forms of assistance, and students’ capacity to cope with academic pressures.
