Abstract

Purpose: This article analyzes the biochemical mechanisms by which naturally occurring bioactive compounds influence oxidative reactions and examines the evidentiary limits of their proposed role in mitigating oxidative stress.

Design/Methodology: A conceptual narrative review critically synthesizes established biochemical mechanisms and analytical methods relating to reactive oxygen species, endogenous defenses, phenolics, flavonoids, carotenoids, and other natural compounds. No primary laboratory measurements or clinical effectiveness estimates are claimed.

Findings: Antioxidant actions depend on molecular structure, reaction kinetics, bioavailability, cellular localization, and biological context. Radical scavenging, metal chelation, and modulation of endogenous defense pathways can contribute to protection, but in vitro chemical assay activity cannot be equated with efficacy in humans.

Practical Implications: The synthesis provides a cautious basis for designing extraction, characterization, cell-based evaluation, and controlled studies of plant-derived bioactive compounds, emphasizing dose, safety, appropriate controls, and reproducibility.

Originality/Value: The article connects chemical reaction mechanisms to biological relevance through a staged evidence framework and differentiates antioxidant capacity, cellular redox regulation, and demonstrated health outcomes.
