Abstract

Purpose: This study aims to develop and test the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of STEM-based mathematics learning devices on statistics materials to improve students' critical thinking skills and data literacy. The research addresses the persistent gap between procedural statistics learning and the need for 21st-century skills in data-driven decision making.

Design/Methodology:  This Research and Development (R&D) study employed the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate) adapted from Thiagarajan. The research subjects were 32 eighth-grade students at a public junior high school in Bengkulu City. Research instruments included validation sheets, response questionnaires, critical thinking tests, and data literacy tests. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis for validity and practicality, and N-Gain analysis for effectiveness.

Findings: The results showed that: (1) The developed learning devices consisting of lesson plans, student worksheets, digital teaching materials, and assessment instruments were validated by experts with an average score of 4.52 out of 5 (very valid category); (2) Practicality was confirmed through teacher responses (92.3%) and student responses (89.7%) in the very practical category; (3) Effectiveness was demonstrated through significant improvement in critical thinking skills (N-Gain = 0.68, medium category) and data literacy (N-Gain = 0.72, medium category) after learning implementation.

Originality/Value: This study contributes to the limited literature on STEM-based statistics learning devices specifically designed to simultaneously improve critical thinking and data literacy in Indonesian secondary education context, providing a comprehensive framework for authentic STEM integration in mathematics education.
